On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the construction of the Dachau concentration camp, the Minister of State for Culture and Media, Claudia Roth, called for unity in the preservation of the memorial. At the same time, the Minister of State reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the further development of educational work. The Dachau concentration camp was the only early camp that existed until the end of National Socialism. It became synonymous with the Nazi reign of terror as early as the 1930s.
Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth: „The Dachau concentration camp is one of the early concentration camps that were set up 90 years ago to brutally persecute and suppress any opposition to the establishment of the National Socialist dictatorship. This happened openly and before the eyes of the population. This was a crucial step in establishing the National Socialist reign of terror and the entire concentration camp system with which Nazi Germany committed the crime against humanity of the Shoah throughout Europe. In Dachau alone, more than 200,000 members of the political opposition and opposition clergy, Jews, Sinti and Roma, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals and so-called ‚asocial‘ and ‚professional criminals‘ have been harassed and exploited with unimaginable suffering since 1933.
Die Erinnerung an die Barbarei des NS-Terrors wach zu halten, das schulden wir den Opfern von damals genauso wie dem Erinnern in die Zukunft für eine lebendige Demokratie. Für diese Aufgabe ist die politische und historische Vermittlungsarbeit der Gedenkstätte Dachau von sehr großer Bedeutung. Dabei unterstützt der Bund sie bereits seit Jahrzehnten und wird ihr selbstverständlich auch in Zukunft ein verlässlicher Partner sein.“
Claudia Roth weiter: „Dies gilt insbesondere auch für die anstehenden, umfangreichen Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen der Gedenkstätte. Daher bin ich zuversichtlich, dass wir gemeinsam mit dem Freistaat Bayern sowie der Stiftung Bayerische Gedenkstätten auch hierbei zu guten Lösungen im Rahmen einer geordneten Antragsstellung kommen werden.“
Die bayerischen KZ-Gedenkstätten Dachau und Flossenbürg werden seit 2008 institutionell vom Bund gefördert, in diesem Jahr mit rund 1,5 Millionen Euro im Rahmen der Gedenkstättenförderung des Bundes. Auch aus dem Programm „Jugend erinnert“ wurden bereits erinnerungspolitische Vorhaben beider Gedenkstätten unterstützt. Neben solchen inhaltlichen Projektförderungen kann der Bund für denkmalpflegerische Maßnahmen zur Substanzerhaltung und Restaurierung auf Antrag weitere Mittel aus Denkmalförderprogrammen bereitstellen. Darüber hinaus stellt der Deutsche Bundestag regelmäßig Fördermittel für investive Kulturmaßnahmen aus dem Programm KulturInvest bereit, so etwa bis zu 20 Millionen Euro für bauliche Maßnahmen in der Kongresshalle des ehemaligen sogenannten Reichsparteitagsgeländes in Nürnberg im Jahr 2022.
In addition to the two concentration camp memorials at Dachau and Flossenbürg, the Minister of State for Culture in Bavaria supports numerous other commemorative projects such as the Documentation Center for the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg, the NS Documentation Center in Munich and the Nuremberg Trials Memorial in Nuremberg.
