Parliamentary State Secretary Christian Kühn handed over a funding check for the klimFAN project in Gaiberg, Baden-Württemberg. Siegmund Space & Education gGmbH and the fan projects coordination center at Deutsche Sportjugend want to encourage football fans to deal with climate protection and climate adaptation in the vicinity of football stadiums for everything to do with men’s professional football in the Bundesliga and European Championship 2024. The focus is on young people, who are sensitized to climate-conscious behavior with practice-oriented methods and a climate master app. The educational project is aimed at football fans from all over Germany and is funded with 189,424 euros from the BMUV funding program „Measures to adapt to the consequences of climate change“.
Parliamentary State Secretary Christian Kühn: „Heat waves, drought or heavy rain – the consequences of the climate crisis are increasingly affecting our everyday lives. So environmentally conscious and climate-friendly action must also become part of everyday life, for example in sports. The Federal Environment Ministry is taking the men’s European Football Championship (EURO 2024) as an opportunity to show from 2022 to summer 2024 what sustainable and climate-friendly sporting activities can look like. Young people in particular are very interested in the climate crisis and environmental issues. We therefore want to encourage them to behave consciously and encourage them to provide convincing impetus for sustainable sport in their environment.”
Gemeinsam mit der Koordinierungsstelle Fanprojekte bei der Deutschen Sportjugend entwickelt die Siegmund Space & Education gGmbH in dem Vorhaben ein Workshop-Konzept, das sich speziell an junge Fußballfans im Alter zwischen 16 und 24 Jahren richtet. Dieses Konzept beinhaltet eine grundlegende Vermittlung von Wissen zum Themenspektrum Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung. Das Wissen aus dem Workshop soll anschließend anhand lebenswelttauglicher Beispiele mit interaktiven Methoden vertieft werden. Mit der Klima-Meister-App sollen junge Fußballfans nach dem Workshop die von ihnen besuchten Fußballstadien und deren Umfeld im Hinblick auf Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung bewerten. Am Ende der Saison 2023/24 – und somit rechtzeitig vor der EURO 2024 – sollen öffentlichkeitswirksam ein Stadion als „Klima-Meister“ sowie die Plätze 2 und 3 gekürt werden.
In Deutschland sind 80 Prozent der Bevölkerung sportlich aktiv, der organisierte Sport in Vereinen umfasst über 27 Millionen Mitgliedschaften. Über den Sport können also viele Menschen für bewusstes Handeln mit Blick auf Umweltschutz, Klimaanpassung und Nachhaltigkeit sensibilisiert werden. 2024 findet in Deutschland die von UEFA, DFB und zehn Ausrichterstädten organisierte Fußball-Europameisterschaft der Herren statt. In Vorbereitung auf das internationale Turnier ist das BMUV innerhalb der Bundesregierung Hauptansprechpartner zu Umwelt-, Klimaanpassungs- und Nachhaltigkeitsthemen.
With the program “Adaptation to the Consequences of Climate Change” (DAS funding programme), BMUV supports innovative projects that provide answers to the consequences of global warming such as heat waves, floods or heavy rainfall events and support adaptation to climate change. Under the funding announcement valid in 2019, local and municipal actors, associations and medium-sized companies as well as educational institutions were funded.
The application for the project “Klimapfiff fürs Klima: Raising awareness and developing the ability to act on climate education for football fans (klimFAN)” comes from the last funding window under the DAS funding announcement from 2019. The funding guidelines were amended in 2021 and now offer other focal points.
